A covered pergola lounge: using the garden nine months a year

Put a roof over outdoor furniture in the UK and the season stretches from June to March.

The single biggest change to how a British garden gets used is not the furniture — it is shelter over it. Once rain is no longer a reason to go inside, the furniture is used in April and October as well as July.

Under cover, upholstery can be softer

Sheltered from direct rain, deeper cushions and heavier weaves become practical. We still specify quick-dry foam and outdoor-grade fabric, because humidity and blown rain reach everywhere, but the seating can be considerably more comfortable than an exposed set.

Anchor the layout with a low table

A generous low table 1200 x 700mm with a slatted lower shelf gives a place for glasses, books and a throw, and stops the seating drifting apart.

Build in the heat and light

Overhead structure gives you somewhere to fix an infrared heater and warm lighting. Both should be positioned in the drawing stage — retrofitting cables to a finished pergola is always visible.

Materials at the edges

The pieces nearest the open edge take the weather. We use the same frame specification throughout so a set can be rearranged without one piece ageing faster than the rest.

Result

In the project photographed here, the client reported using the space every month except January and February.
