Designing solid wood storage around real belongings

How shelf spans, drawer depth and adjustable interiors turn a beautiful cabinet into storage that works every day.

Storage succeeds when designed around what it holds. A beautiful exterior cannot compensate for shelves that sag, drawers that waste depth or doors that collide with the room.

Make an inventory

Group belongings by size, weight and frequency. Everyday items belong between knee and shoulder height; heavy objects should sit low. Measure the tallest item and add hand clearance.

Choose shelves and drawers

Books need shorter shelf spans or a thicker front edge than light objects. Adjustable shelves add flexibility, while some fixed shelves strengthen a tall cabinet. Full-extension runners make the rear of deep drawers accessible.

Plan doors in the room

Hinged doors give a full view but need swing space. Sliding doors save floor area but reveal only part of the cabinet. Check handles, nearby walls and circulation before choosing.
