How to choose solid wood furniture that will last
3 October 2026

A practical checklist for judging timber, construction, finish and proportions before choosing a lasting piece of furniture.
Solid wood furniture can serve a home for decades, but the species name alone does not guarantee quality. Board selection, joinery, finish and proportions all determine how a piece will age.
Start with the timber
Ask which parts are solid wood and which use veneer or engineered board. Solid timber should be properly dried for its destination. Natural variation is part of the material; look for thoughtful grain matching rather than identical boards.
Examine the construction
Drawers should run smoothly, doors should sit evenly and a table should feel stable. Traditional joints are useful where loads repeat, while well-designed modern fittings have a place in adjustable furniture.
Judge the finish and proportions
A good finish protects without hiding the grain. Oil is often easier to repair locally, while lacquer can offer stronger spill resistance. Measure circulation, doorways, lifts and stairs, then choose a scale that remains comfortable when doors, drawers and chairs are open.
