Indoor and outdoor timber furniture are not the same

Why outdoor furniture needs different timber, construction, drainage and maintenance from furniture kept inside.

Moving an indoor table onto a terrace does not make it outdoor furniture. Rain, ultraviolet light, temperature changes and standing water demand a different approach.

Timber and water

Outdoor suitability depends on natural durability, treatment and exposure. Furniture should shed water: horizontal surfaces need drainage gaps or a slight fall, and end grain should not sit in puddles.

Fixings and upholstery

Corrosion-resistant fixings reduce staining and deterioration. Outdoor cushions need quick-draining foam and UV-resistant covers, but last longer when cleaned, dried and stored during prolonged bad weather.

Accepting weathering

Sun and rain alter colour, often turning exposed timber silver-grey. Accept this patina or slow it with cleaning and a compatible finish. Covers must remain ventilated because a sealed wet cover traps moisture.
