Lighting that shows walnut timber at its best

American black walnut absorbs light. In a dim room it can look black; in a harsh room it can look flat. The right lighting reveals the grain and the depth that make walnut worth specifying.

Avoid direct downlights straight onto the top

A single downlight directly above a walnut table creates a bright centre and dark edges. It also flattens the surface. Better to angle light across the grain, which picks up the figure and the oil finish.

Use grazing light for cabinets and panels

A low-voltage LED strip set back 100–150mm above a slatted or fluted walnut panel casts soft shadows in the grooves. The texture becomes visible without the light source itself being seen.

Warm white, always

Walnut looks best under 2700K–3000K. Cool white makes the timber read grey and the grain disappear. We specify the colour temperature as part of the finish sample process.

Layer the room, not just the piece

A walnut dining table under a warm pendant, with dimmed wall lights and candle-level ambient light, looks dramatically better than the same table under a bright ceiling fitting alone. The furniture benefits from the whole lighting scheme.
