North American ash: a guide for furniture buyers

Why ash is valued for strength, expressive grain and finishing flexibility, plus what to consider before choosing it.

North American ash is a hardwood known for clear, lively grain and a useful balance of strength and workability. Its pale natural colour makes it adaptable to different interiors.

Strength without visual heaviness

Ash has good shock resistance. In a chair, table or bed frame, that resilience supports slimmer-looking components when the structure is correctly designed.

A distinctive grain

Growth rings create a strong linear pattern. A large tabletop should be judged by how adjacent boards are selected and arranged. Small colour shifts are natural rather than faults.

Flexible colour and care

Pale ash accepts stains and polishing well. Honey tones feel warm and bright, while walnut-toned stain adds contrast. Use coasters, wipe spills promptly and keep solid timber away from direct heat or strong air-conditioning.
