Oil, hardwax oil or lacquer? Choosing a wood finish
28 September 2026

Compare the look, protection and repairability of common furniture finishes before deciding what suits your room.
A finish changes how timber looks, feels and withstands daily life. The choice depends on use, desired sheen and whether local repair matters more than maximum surface resistance.
Oil and hardwax oil
Oil keeps the grain tactile and is straightforward to refresh, but spills need prompt cleaning. Hardwax oil adds surface protection while retaining a close-to-timber feel; small worn areas can often be recoated locally.
Lacquer
Lacquer forms a film over the wood and can resist staining and frequent wiping. It ranges from matt to gloss, but deep damage is harder to blend invisibly.
Choose by use
A dining table, bathroom cabinet and display shelf face different risks. Ask for samples on the actual timber, view the sheen under room lighting and clarify maintenance before approving the finish.
