A garden dining set for a changeable British summer

You get perhaps thirty usable evenings a year. The furniture should take under a minute to be ready for them.

The practical test for UK garden dining is not how it looks in a catalogue photograph in July. It is whether you will actually carry everything outside when the sun appears at six o'clock on a Thursday.

Design for a one-minute setup

Cushions in a lidded, ventilated box beside the table rather than in the shed. A table that needs no cover. Chairs light enough to move one-handed. Every step you remove is an extra evening used.

Size it for six, extend for ten

A 1800mm table seats six comfortably. We build extension leaves that store within the frame so the table becomes a 2400mm ten-seater without a trip to the garage.

Shelter it or accept the move

A pergola, a wall or a deep eave makes a set usable in drizzle, which in the UK effectively doubles the season. If there is no shelter, keep the pieces light and plan a winter home for them.

Lighting extends the evening

Low-level lighting under bench seats and a single warm pendant over the table hold people outside for another hour once the light drops.

Pick a surface that dries fast

Slatted teak or a woven top drains and dries within minutes of a shower. A solid, flat top holds a film of water and needs wiping every time.
