Walnut or oak? Choosing timber for made-to-measure furniture

Walnut and oak behave differently in a room, and the choice is rarely only about colour.

Walnut

American black walnut is dark, warm and figured. It suits rooms with plenty of natural light where you want the furniture to read as the focal point. Grain-matching across a full room set is possible but requires boards from the same batch — plan the whole room at once.

Oak

European oak is paler and calmer. It is more forgiving in smaller or north-facing rooms, and it takes a lime or white oil well if you want a Scandinavian tone.

Movement and care

Both are kiln-dried before machining. Keep either away from an unshielded radiator or underfloor heating without a rug, and re-oil high-use surfaces annually.

Mixing the two

Rooms that use walnut for the dining table and oak for built-in joinery can work, provided the finishes share the same sheen level. We make finish samples for both before cutting.
