Wood movement, humidity and well-made furniture

Why solid timber expands and contracts, and how good design helps furniture cope with changing indoor humidity.

Wood keeps responding to moisture after it becomes furniture. It expands mainly across the grain as humidity rises and contracts as air dries. This is normal behaviour, not automatically a defect.

Why movement matters

A wide tabletop changes dimension more than a narrow rail. If fixed rigidly across its width, stress may cause splitting or distortion. Broad boards need room to move where they meet a frame or base.

Design that accommodates timber

Slotted holes, tabletop buttons and correctly oriented joints hold parts securely while permitting seasonal changes. Frame-and-panel doors use a stable frame around a panel that can move independently.

Managing the room

Avoid extreme humidity swings. Keep furniture clear of radiators, dehumidifier outlets and direct air-conditioning. A fine seasonal gap can be normal; a widening split, severe twist or opening joint should be assessed by the maker.
